I have always been interested in all kinds of art whether
it be painting or sculpture, music or writing. I just love it all. I think that
music and poetry are extremely similar. A lot of poems come from music artists
we just don’t realize it. What do you think song lyrics are before they are put
to a beat? Poetry.
Some
of my favorite poets are Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Frost, Maya Angelou and of
course Doctor Seuss but my favorite would have to be Shel Silverstein. My
favorite poem of his is Where the Sidewalk Ends, because in this poem he talks
about how people as they get older lose their imagination and that the only way
to get it back is to follow the arrows that the children have left for you.
‘Where the sidewalk ends’ it’s not a place at all but more a state of mind. The
state of mind of a child where everything is full of life. It showed me that no
matter what I can’t go to the place where the “smoke blows black” because if I
go there I won’t appreciate any of this art or be able to make my own. Poems
like these are important to me because without them then I wouldn’t be the
dreamer I am today.
It’s the same with music. Growing up on
artists like led Zeppelin, Jonny Cash, Dixie Chicks, Beatles, Tupac, Rolling
Stones and Muddy Waters I ended up having a wide variety of tastes. I love all
music no matter the genre as long as the poetry behind it gave me chills or
told me a story. One of my favorite songs as a child was The Little Girl by John Michael Montgomery. I understood the meaning when I
was five because I had asked my mom to explain it to me. The story that it told
was so sad. Its stories like that that really make people think. Songs like
that make people feel. Music is like reading a book a lot of the time. Other
times music is like reality slapping you in the face. No one really cares how
many cars you have or how rich you are but they do care about if you can make
them feel something. That’s why music is important because anything that can
make you feel emotion by just using words is important whether it’s a speech,
music, poetry or a book. If it can make you feel, then it’s worth something in
my book.
I definitely like how you brought up the emotions that arts of all types can bring up in us.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you're into older styles of music too! I wish pop music today was like it used to be back then, but it seems as though music has gone in an entirely different direction.
