“Music is Powerful”

Music has always been an important part of my life.  I grew up listening to music.  I have always included music when I am working on projects, it gives me motivation.
I listened to mostly rock growing up as a child.  As an adult, I began listening to country.  I listened to that for several years.  My mom passed away in February of 1999 and it became very difficult to listen to country after that.  I would find myself sobbing like a baby when listening to country music.  I then went back to listening to rock, it was more upbeat.
The most recent song I have been able to relate to in regards to my life and having a great meaning is “Carry Me” by Papa Roach.  My cousin Vic had an extremely rough childhood, so my family offered for him to come live with us.  He and I were more like siblings rather than cousins.  My dad was Vic’s mentor. They became very close over the years.  Vic was the owner of a very successful body shop, which worked on high end cars.  Vic was at the height of his career and he was teaching his children the ropes of the business.
In 2012, Vic was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer.  The doctors operated to remove the tumor and he began treatments.  The tumor returned a year later, the doctors did another surgery to remove tumor and he began treatments again.  Shortly after his second surgery he suffered a stroke, affecting his left side mobility.  Vic was used to facing adversity due to his rough upbringing and building a business from the ground up.  This would be the biggest struggle of his life.
After Vic’s second tumor and stroke his health deteriorated very quickly.  My husband and I were there to support Vic, his wife, and kids through his illness.  There were many times we would carry him to the restroom, bed, and to the car for his doctor’s appointments.  There were many times Vic questioned why he was going through this.  He also would become very frustrated with his situation.
Vic knew his time on earth was coming to an end.  He asked my husband and me to promise we would be there in the end, of course we made that promise.  On June 24th, 2015 Vic was rushed to the hospital with a bleed on the brain.  He lost consciousness, we were by his side in the hospital, and they transferred him to Kobacker House, which is a hospice care facility.  I sat in the chair beside his bed and all night and was there as I had promised when he drew his last breath of life on June 26th, 2015.
I believe music has such a wonderful and powerful effect on peoples’ lives.  Listening to music can take you back in time, like a time capsule.  You can hear a song and reflect back to a time in your life, and for that, I am thankful.

“Carry Me” By Papa Roach
I've been looking for something sacred,
Running away from the light.
Got a burn all the bridges in my head,
That lead me away from my life.
I question my own existence,
Question the meaning of life.
Why don't you carry me?
Why don't you carry me?
I can't move on
I can't live on
Carry me
Why don't you carry me?
I can't save me,
I am crazy.
Without you.
It takes horns to hold up my halo,
And strength to get through the fight.
Now I'm laying my cards on the table,
Praying that everything will be alright.
I question my own existence,
Question the meaning of life.
Why don't you carry me?
Why don't you carry me?
I can't move on,
I can't live on.
Carry me.
Why don't you carry me?
I can't save me,
I am crazy.
Without you.
The hardest ones to love,
Are the ones that need it most.
The hardest ones to love,
Are the ones that need it most.
The hardest ones to love,
Are the ones that need it most.
Why don't you carry me?
Why don't you carry me?
I cant move on,
I cant live on.
Carry me.
Why don't you carry me?
I can't save me,
I am crazy.
The hardest ones to love,
Are the ones that need it most.
The hardest ones to love,
Are the ones that need it the most.
The hardest ones to love,
Are the ones that need it most.
The hardest ones to love,
Are the ones that need it the most.
Carry me (carry me)
Carry me
Yeah.
Carry me (carry me)
Carry me (carry me)

  2. Your metaphor for the time capsule really is a great example. Song that take you back to memories really does have a huge affect on people. I will have to listen to this song to get the full experience. I also like that you were able to give background about the person. Great job!
