     Journal 4 - Charles Taylor

Charles Taylor was the President of Liberia from 1997 to 2003. He was indicted for war crimes by the Special Court for Sierra Leon. The court was started by peacekeepers after they ended the civil war in Sierra Leon. Charles Taylor was convicted of aiding and abetting the Revolutionary United Front. There were 11 counts including rape, murder and pillaging. I found a few interesting facts while researching Charles Taylor. First Muammar Al-Gadaffi trained Taylor. I thought this was interesting since he was the leader of Libya that for whatever reason we helped overthrow by providing aid to the rebels. I also wanted to note how Firestone supported Charles Taylor financially through his time as president. Though they claim they did not support the civil war. Taylor had become the President of Liberia by forming a rebel group and creating his own civil war in which he overthrew the former president. He was paid millions by Firestone to allow them access to Liberia's rubber. He used the rubber plantation by the Sierra Leon border to house and help train RUF rebels. At one point during the war the rebels were pushed back to the Liberian border where they were resupplied by Taylor. His actions extended the civil war and destabilized the region for even longer. Taylor conducted many atrocities in Liberia however they were unable to prosecute him any of them. He was only convicted of crimes conducted in Sierra Leon during the civil war.

  1. This is really fascinating. Cruel but interesting that they couldn't convict him for everything that he had done.

  2. He has done some very cruel things. It's a shame that so many people get away with committing crimes.

  5. He seems like a true gangster which is bad but stereotypical. When I saw Firestone I had to reread it and was shocked to see that.
