In World War II the British took over Fourah Bay College and used the buildings as a part of the war effort. The school was relocated to Mabang, Sierra Leone until the war was over which is when they moved back to the original building in Mount Aureol. In 1876 the school became affiliated with Durham University in England. The two schools continued to be affiliated until 1967 which is when the Sierra Leone government merged the university with Njala University in 1966. the university currently educates about 3,500 students.
