Journal Two from Matthew Glenn

Hi, my name is Matthew and I am a freshman. I'm currently undecided on a major, but I am interested in business and law school. I was born and raised in Delaware, Ohio. I am easygoing, I like to travel, try new things, and go new places. I would say my hobby is music. I have a huge appreciation for music of all types and could listen for hours.

The theme in A Long Way Gone that was most apparent to me is war. The book tells how quickly war can change things and how devastating the effects can be. It's important because it tells in a short period of time, how life the boy had once known, was gone and how he is uncertain about his family's well being. To me this means with the issues that he is facing, there will be many more to come in the book, but he continues to persevere.

  1. I think your thoughts on the first chapter is a excellent way describe the events and thoughts being told in the first few pages of this book.

  2. I do agree that war can change things very quickly! Yes, I also agree that his life as he knew it was gone. He is no longer able to be the young boy, he now is a man. It is also sad to me that he does not know where his family is.

  5. I think listening to music is very enjoyable, i respect all types of music as well. Listening to music allows your mind to be free of some of the negatives in your life.

  7. I agree with regards to music even though my music taste is that wide. I do try new music now and then but I usually keep to my personal preference. I truly like your points on the chapter. War can easily flip one's life upside down. Some people say no news is good news but I say that not knowing eat us away from the inside. Some people can find the strength to continue while others cannot.

  9. Listening to instrumental music has really helped me to focus on more of what I am reading rather than have no clue what what I currently read. I suggest you should try it some time!(:
